From the Air and Sea

U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) safeguards our Nation by anticipating and confronting security threats through our aviation and maritime law enforcement expertise, innovative capabilities, and partnerships at the border and beyond. With approximately 1,800 federal agents and mission support personnel, 240 aircraft, and 300 marine vessels operating throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, AMO conducts its mission in the air and maritime environments at and beyond the border and within the nation's interior. AMO interdicts unlawful people and cargo approaching U.S. borders, investigates criminal networks, provides domain awareness in the air and maritime environments, and responds to contingencies and national taskings. In Fiscal Year 2022, AMO enforcement actions resulted in 967 arrests and 134,981 apprehensions of undocumented individuals, as well as the seizure or disruption of 250,616 pounds of cocaine, 1,475 pounds of fentanyl, 25,625 pounds of methamphetamine, 1,342 weapons, and $21.7 million.

At Ports of Entry

"CBP Field Operations: Protecting America 24/7" provides a comprehensive overview of CBP's varied port operations and their importance to our nation’s border security and economic vitality. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a complex mission at ports of entry with broad law enforcement authorities tied to screening all foreign visitors, returning American citizens and imported cargo that enters the U.S. at more than 300 land, air and sea ports.

Along U.S. Borders

The United States Border Patrol is the mobile, uniformed law enforcement arm of U.S. Customs and Border Protection within the Department of Homeland Security responsible for securing U.S. borders between ports of entry. The Border Patrol was officially established on May 28, 1924 by an act of Congress passed in response to increasing illegal immigration. As mandated by this Act, the small border guard in what was then the Bureau of Immigration was reorganized into the Border Patrol. The initial force of 450 officers was given the responsibility of combating illegal entries and the growing business of human smuggling.

International Initiatives

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) coordinates and supports international initiatives, programs and activities with our external partners around the world. The CBP Office of International Affairs (INA) has been tasked to advance the diplomatic mission of CBP and extend the zone of U.S. border security across the globe. INA leads the international mission of CBP and acts as a force multiplier for CBP frontline operators through the sharing of information, international-partner engagement, and the promotion of CBP international initiatives. CBP focuses on international cooperation and strengthening multi- and bi-lateral relationships to achieve international agreements and joint efforts that both facilitate and secure legitimate trade and travel. CBP strives to protect U.S. borders from beyond by implementing programs and initiatives that promote anti-terrorism, global border security, non-proliferation, export controls, immigration and capacity building. CBP supports a number of international organizations and is the lead agency responsible for coordinating the U.S. Government’s engagement with the World Customs Organization (WCO).

Driver dies in crash following failure to yield and CBP deployment of vehicle immobilization device in Winterhaven, California

On March 8, 2024, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the U.S. Border Patrol El Centro Sector communications center broadcasted that a stolen vehicle, described as a white Dodge Caravan, was reportedly seen near the California Department of Food and Agriculture Station on Interstate 8 (I-8) in Winterhaven, CA.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection released body-worn camera footage today from an incident where a man was found unresponsive at the I-35 checkpoint in Laredo, Texas, on Feb. 17, 2024.
